Cruyff won the Ballon d'Or in 1971, 1973 and 1974 — the first three-time winner, and the only player ever to win it as the physical embodiment of a system. Total Football needed a genius at its centre to function, and for six years it had one. He did not play positions; he played the idea of positions, surfacing wherever the geometry demanded, dragging markers into each other's paths.

In 1974 he captained the greatest side never to win the World Cup, a Netherlands team that redefined what international football could look like, and won a penalty in the final without a single Dutch player having touched the ball — a move constructed from the kick-off like a chess problem. Later he won the European Cup as a manager with a Dream Team that taught a generation of La Masia pupils how the game should think. The turn that bears his name, the 1974 pass, the 14 on his back: few players leave behind a syntax. Cruyff left a grammar.
