Eight Ballon d'Ors: 2009 through 2012 as a four-in-a-row no one had managed before, then 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2023 — the last of them sealing the missing chapter, a World Cup in Qatar won at 35 with seven goals and a final for the ages. The numbers have long since passed through the ceiling of comparability: 91 goals in a calendar year (2012), the all-time record for a single club, four Champions Leagues, more than a thousand career goal involvements.

What the stat sheets cannot file is the weekly impossibility — the low centre of gravity, the ball attached to the left foot by something other than physics, the passes that reverse the game's polarity. Barcelona's coaches describe training-ground goals that drew applause from defenders. He was the greatest player of the greatest club side ever assembled, then moved to a country that had stopped believing in him and won them the thing they wanted most. The award stopped being a competition around 2012; it simply measures the distance between him and everyone else, annually, and thanks him for attending.
