Riva won the 1969 Ballon d'Or as the striker who dragged unfashionable Cagliari from the provinces to a Scudetto — one league title for a club whose entire history fits in one man's career. His left foot was called the thunderbolt by an Italian press not given to meteorology: the shot was heavy, flat, and arrived before defenders had finished their stride. That season he scored at a rate the defensive golden age of Serie A should not have permitted.
He remains Italy's leading international scorer (35 goals), a record held across half a century of Azzurri strikers — untouched by Baggio, Del Piero, Toni, Immobile. He refused every transfer away from Sardinia, playing a whole career for the island, then served the national team for decades as the quiet man beside the bench. The thunderbolt chose to be lightning that never left one sky.
